Probably silly question in regards to Triple channel DD3 being used in a Z77 board.

Wonder if people can help.

Im building a cheap home media server probably based around a G1610 & Asus P8Z77-V LX mobo (reasonably good power saving choices).

However I have triple channel DDR from an old i7 920 build I had a while back and wondering from the board point of view - while I know it will physically fit - will it run worse compared to some newer budget dual channel DDR 3 I buy specifically for the new board?

(is it worth buying a single channel 2GB stick for £20 to make the treble channel set up to 8GB?)

it should work fine, two sticks for dual channel so 4gb in total

and yes add in a stick if you can pick one up cheap that matches the speed/timings/voltage ect
