Probably the billionth Xbox or PS3 thread...

And this is what I hate about the PS3.

Gone in to do this: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=19411013&postcount=3040 as after having a month offline then problems getting my first game I thought I'd go in and get Infamous but what's this... a firmware update first.

3 minutes in and 5% downloaded. I give up. I'll watch some TV and play some 360 tonight. I still remember the day I got Heavy Rain home, my wife and I were really excited to play it and wham, install then a huge patch which took well over an hour to download and install on my paltry rural 3mb line. We didn't play that night.

Uncharted 1 & 2 are some of my games of the generation and Sony are doing a hell of lot right when it comes to hardcore gaming but my god when people say PSN and the whole way Sony do software is best it makes me mad.

Thought I'd see the usual few in this type of thread. ^lol

I'd try and work out what his mates have, this is probably the most important thing. Worry about how easy it is to download a demo later (though I doubt you are that sad).

I'm pretty sure no one said it was "best" But the feature works - Seems you're having trouble though. but don't think everyone else is because of that. Fair enough, you're going on your experiences. but so are others, and if they say its "best".... although again, i don't think anyone did. It's their right.

I'll say what I said in the last thread that came up about this anyways, a 360 console is dirt cheap these days with a hard drive, and you can grab a massive library of games for less than £10, Awesome games, Cross platform and Exclusives. If I was looking to get a console and looking to keep money in my pocket I'd get myself a 360, chances are your kids friends will have one too. PS3's although great, seem to be in the home of older kids, or kids with Dads in the know. (Maybe thats some what a blanket statement, but its what I've noticed)

If Bluray is something you want however, Then there's only 1 route

Actaully the little sod chose to have 10 new Beyblades instead of an XBox... so the whole issue has gone to bed till Christmas. We also realised that if I get a game or two the missus gets 1 or two and we get a couple for the boy... on top of the console extra controller etc we were talking about a deeply big wedge of cash. Which is far more doable as lots of Xmas pressies :)
Also looking at the Kinect I am expecting to see the next round of games designed for it on release at Christmas - and also to have an idea how much longer the Xbox and PS3 are going to be around. Want to get an idea how many Move/Kinect games are going to be released - if the Xbox is going to reach the end of it's life christmas 2012 are people really going to develop a heap of kinect games?

It always boils down to :-

PS3 the blu-ray player is brilliant if you don't already have one and some of the exclusives are excellent, but the online is shoddy at best and there are huge updates every other month for the firmware and first party games, I bought move and it is really really unsupported

360 if you want an excellent online service, you can try EVERY game on the store before you buy it, there are tiny infrequent patches (5mb at most) and most games that are on both consoles run smoother on it, kinect although a gimmick in my eyes is doing really well and there are tons of games in the pipeline

Not really no, just trying too give my opinions

I had no probs with that!

I only mentioned PSN/Demos' as an ease of use thing.. I have 2 kids (5 and 7), and even the 5 year old downloads his own demo's, he sees the latest Lego title as it's right in front of him when he turns the Xbox on, he just presses A a lot and within a 10 mins it's downloaded and he's playing it.. It's nice if the kids can use the console without your intervention, I've locked down their accounts, they can't buy anything, they can only download suitably rated games, and even better, if they do want to play a slightly older game, I can authorise that and it allows you to add it to an exception list.

I don't have an issue with anyone's recommendations of the PS3, it's a highly personal choice, and even if you don't make the optimal choice, it's not like you can lose either way..

Now that I have inherited an 8 year old who is deeply in love with his PS2 - ratchett and crank / Spy Vs Spy / Lego Star Wars etc. In the process I gained an other half who loves games as well - as long as they involve a really good story line or lots of blood...

while i would have a 360 over ps3 every time, the above would suggest a PS3 would hit all bases for you.

I finally got around to picking up a console last night... a 250gig Xbox 360 :) :)

Now I have a bright shiny console and nothing much to play on it :(

I would love some suggestions of value games that I can go and pick up from 'pre-owned' or the Live marketplace that quickly give us a small library of games to play without having to get a mortgage!

To give you an idea of flavour - Jen loves, GTA and wierd Japanese games like Project Xero/Zero?
The Boy loves all the Lego games, the Simpsons games, Sonic Games etc
I love RTS (not sure there is any hope of that on an Xbox?), RPG's, scary First Person shooters etc.
So are there any games that all you Xbox owners have had on your shelves for years and you still get out for a play (Fnarf!)?

Excellent choice in my opinion.

You cant go wrong with the Lego games for the kid.
I still pull out Halo Wars for a blast every so often, so that might tickle your RTS fancy.
Red Dead is like GTA but with cowboys and has an excellent Undead addon.

If you're looking to build up your library of cheap games, my son and wife always steer back to Lego or Viva Pinata ;)

If you have Live, you can take a look through there in the genre's tab for some games that will suit.

Get a Kinect and your kid will love Kinectimals and possibly the Fun Labs freebies.

After much umming and ahhing, I went for a 360 on the basis of Kinect. I do miss Singstar though, Lips is crap by comparison :(

Well I have about 20 PS2 games to go and trade in against a few nice new 360 games Today :) - It is only about as I havn't opened all the boxes to see what the child has jammed in them instead of what should be there...

At the moment my classic games list is probably:
Lego Batman/any others there
Any of the Sonics
What other games have you bought your kids that they have kept playing on Xbox?
Red Dead Redemption
Bioshock
Dead Space
Fallout 3
Dues Ex
Dragon Age
GTA of some Flavour
Perhaps a Halo - I completed Reach a year or so ago, was ODST any good?
Assasins Quest
Batman AA
Or if I get a really good deal on Live points castle crushers... what other must have Live games are there?

Not going to be getting all of them - but gives me a target on my trawl through the availables... are there any others that really ought to be on the list? What was Viva Pinata?

While I know I can go download demos etc I want a few games now - and Demos eat bandwidth!

I'd go PS3, if not only for the fact he's already familiar with the platform.

I've just recenly got my first one and prefer it much more than my 360 (Which I also have kinect for, it's nothing special. You'll love it for all of a week then realise you're dancing round the room like a gibbon).
If you're going to have it in the front room it'll also make a much better device for the rest of the family. The blue ray and DVD upscaling will be good for you, as well as the 4od/LoveFilm/iPlayer/ITV Player. Use the money you'd save each month paying for XBL to get a cheap Lovefilm package on your PS3 and have some movies to watch or something :)

For games you're probably better just browsing some sites and finding out which ones he'd prefer more and which console offers more of them, although I think it'll probably be the PS3.

Not to mention the better performance of the PS3 :)

I have both... I also have two kids in my house. A 5yr old and a 6yr old..

The 5yr old prefers the PS3

The 6yr old prefers the 360.

I hope that helps.

:D

LOL no - since I now own a 360! I am now trying to work out how to put enough games on the shelf to keep us all happy without paying more than the Xbox cost...

Bioshock, Dead Space, Fallout 3, Dragon Age: Origins and Batman: Arkham Asylum are all older games so they wouldn't set you back much.

Lego Star Wars and Lego Batman should also be dirt cheap now.

Ps3 has better hardware, bluray, the controllers are smaller (xbox ones really are big for small hands), more media, an Internet browser, free online play, PC connectivity for media.

Xbox has more people screaming in lobbies, constant racist abuse, 101 menus to move through on the home screen, 100 of which are adverts, forza and halo (the only reason I still own mine).

In the past, the major upside to xbox was always that it was cheaper, that's changing now though and by the time you've factored in xbl, it's false economy anyway.

PS3 has more fanboys too.
