On occassions my PC doesn't ping when I start it up & nothing appears on the monitor. I then have to hold down the power button to force shutdown & then start it up again. Usually on the second (or rarely more) attempt I get a single ping & everything fires up okay.

The only other problem I have (which I guess may or may not be releated) is that whenever I play games on my PC ...... actually the only game I've played in the last year or so is TF2! Anyway, whenever I play this the computer freezes after playing for more than 20 minutes or so & I have to force a power off & restart the PC.

Anyone know what the problem might be? Could it be the PSU or maybe the GFX card is struggling? As I said before, once in Windows I can do everything else without any problems at all. Everything works perfectly well.

Cheers ;)

I recently had this problem with my old PC along with graphics sometimes messing up in games, took me forever to figure out the problem but it seemed to be the graphics card, it was lose in the socket (dell had build my PC a forgot one of the screws).

Sounds like it could also be your problem and is worth a check.

Firstly, use memtest86+ to verify the memory is ok. Try using one memory stick at a time and try the single sticks in different slots. If one stick of memory fails in all slots, then its almost certainly a RAM problem. If the working RAM stick works in one slot but not another, then this is certainly going to be a memory controller problem which is located on the CPU

Check that the memory is set correctly i.e. Frequency, VDIMM and latency timings. Check the manufacturers website for details.

If your memory looks ok, then you may need to check your PSU. Make sure it's supply the correct power:

When you can get it to boot then take a good look at the system dump and Event Manager for clues. Event manager is often overlooked and under estimated.

Lastly, flash your motherboard BIOS. I had the same problem last week with a new motherboard. Turned out that it didn't like the RAM but a BIOS update sorted it. Gigabyte can update the BIOS using the Live Update Utility which is superb so it might be worth doing anyway :)
