I can record footage using Afterburner, and I can play it back with VLC or MPC or whatevs, but I can't seem to get it to work in Windows Movie Maker or even Sony Vegas.

What's going wrong? I'm recording at 30 FPS, 85% quality, MPEG compression, full frame on a 7970 in Win7.

when you say you cant get it to play back, do you mean it physically wont play or is it just super stuttery?

i assume you are using .mjpg compression, not .mpeg, so your bitrate might be too high for the video players to cope with. with 720p 60FPS recording i usually get 250,000kbps, which barely anything can cope with.

it can easily be reduced to 20 times smaller with no loss in quality if i use a compression that cannot be done in real time on desktop PCs

Sorry yeah, I'm using .mjpg compression. Also I'm recording at 1440p so I suppose the bit rate is very high. Some of these files are >10GB and they only last a few minutes.
