Hi I need help!
I upgrade my brother's PC last autumn ASUS A8N SLi Deluxe, AMD x2 4400 & 2 GB of Ballistix 4000. Set it run at 400 MHz, no overclock & all was well until Easter.
PC refused to boot emitting a slow constant beep. Local PC shop said RAM was problem, faulty stick, & works fine with just 1. Doesn't matter what slots are used: with 2 sticks no boot. 1 stick - suspect faulty one - will boot sometimes but not others. Have RMA'ed it to OcUK but they were returned unchanged & no comment regarding if/how they were tested & what result was. MemTest, 3 cycles, gives both sticks OK. Can't get RAM to run on any setting other than auto.PC boots to Windows but falls over soon after. Have upgraded BIOS to no avail. Bios settings for memory are more than 2-4-4-4-6 on manual setting so don't know what to chose for others. No SPD setting.

Q. If it is not the RAM is it the mobo or a compatability prob with Crucial & ASUS? I went with it rather than Corsair [previous choice] due to rave reviews.
Thanks, Andrew

The Ballistix is terrible and a lot seem to die after a few months. Try looping test 8 of memtest on it for an hour or so. Bump Vdimm to 2.8 aswell, which is what Crucial rate the Ballistix at.

The 2-4-4-4-6 sounds very stange

At 400Mhz try it at:

CAS 2.5
tRP 3
tRCD 3
tRAS 7

Command rate 2T

Vdimm 2.8V

Today I just returned a 512mb stick of Ballistix ddr400 ram (after it arrived yesterday). My pc just wouldn't boot up at all with it, either on it's own or paired up with my existing 512mb stick.

...starting to hear about lots of problems with Ballistix sticks now!

Hi Pilgrim57,

have you tested the memory yourself with memtest86?

I had the same problem with one stick was bad, the other other good, confirmed with testing program. I was using them with a Asus A8N SLi Premium X2 4400 for 7 months with no problem .

Phoned Crucial for RMA number, confirmed that I tested them with memtest86 and one was bad, returned both sticks. Couple days new memory arrived.

Simon

Update

HI again - I have tested with Memtest 1 stick on test 8 for 1 1/2 hrs no errors!
Timings are 3-3-3-8 @ 403MHz
BIOS won't give SPD settings.
Had memory errors running Nero today encoding a Video DVD.
Will try with 2nd stick at suggested timings & report back.

Any more suggestions welcome, thanks

RMA straight to crucial TBH, had 3 sets 2x1gb, after a few months ,sometimes weeks they go bad. phone them up and request rma number
but first memtest at 250(500mhz) 2.8v 3-4-4-8.

Update

Right - Have got two sticks to boot but only using slots B1 + B2.
Discovered that when 2nd stick added auto setting reduced speed to 333MHz!
Have run at 2,5-3-3-7 2.8 volts no problems
2-2-2-5 at 2.8 & 2.85 threw up errors on tests 3 &/or 7, mostly 7
Now running at 403MHz at 2-3-3-6.

It would appear the fault is with A1 slot on mobo.

Thanks guys for all the helpful suggestions :)

Crucial 0 ASUS 1

The plot thickens - it turns out that it wasn't the mobo after all.
About 1 1/2hrs running & the PC crashed & refused to boot until 2nd stick removed.
The RAM is NBG wil contact Crucial tomorrow for RMA & not too hopeful that problems won't recur with replacements going by the posts here. :(

Search results for "ballistix failures"

yup... your another one on the list of having to go through dead Crucial ram :(

yet crucial dont even admit that there is a problem!!! (i had 9 out of 10 chips i brought failed)

demand a full refund on both modules, and get some Corsair ASAP :)

Just had my second set fail on me sinve november, may have to think about a change of manufacturer

I was wondering which revisions are failing? I read in another forum (Xtreme) that Crucial made same adjustments to the PCB and the problem is solved. I just ordered a pair of 2x1024Gb Z503 Ballistix a few days ago (yet to be recieved)
At the time of ordering I didn't know about the problem concerning the 2x1024 sticks. Now all these threads about failing sticks got me worried.

It seems that the new sticks which are labeled .16TD1 are not failing. (and are still using Micron -5B D chips, so it defnitely seems there's something wrong with the PCB from other labeled sticks)

i`d send em back under the distance selling 7 day cooling period

Hi guys,

I have this same problem - one dead stick, the other fine.

I've ran both sticks in B1 socket on ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe and one POSTs, the other does not. Over the past few weeks/month my system has been booting occasionally and not others (with both sticks in dual channel config).

This with both sticks running at 2-2-2-5-1T @DDR400 2.8v

I've mailed OCUK for an RMA number, so we'll see where this goes.

I sent mine back and got a refund, useless RAM.

I recieved the sticks today, and it's the 16TD revision. I'll return these.

before you've even tested them?

if its 2gig kit they will ALWAYs be 16TD cos it has to be double sided to make 1gig chips

I know, but there's also 16TD1 that's also 2x1024 (like my 16TD) but those are the right ones which don't die.

Those 16TD1 revisions have been out for a couple of months now and there are no problems reported with them
So what I got , is a pair from the old and faulty batch.

( the 1 after TD stands for a PCB revison. It's the PCB that is failing , not the Micron chips. I want the new sticks with the proper PCB revision and I expact to get those, certainly if that PCB revison has been around for a few months now)
