Problem flashing firmware

Hi all. I'm hoping someone can help with this...

I bought a "re-furbished" D-Link DAP-1160 router on Amazon for £15 or thereabouts - very cheap, really. I want to use it to connect my XBox 360 to my existing wireless network, so I need to set it up in client mode and then run an ethernet cable into the 360. So far, so good.

However, some berk has flashed the router with firmware from a Brazilian outfit, called APRouter. It works, just about, so I assume it's the same chipset and whatnot, but I'm not really happy with it. The D-Link auto set-up CD obviously now doesn't work. I've tried setting things up by hand with the web interface (once I managed to figure out the static IP hardcoded to the router - argh) and it's pretty hideous, and I'm inclined to think the D-Link set-up would be rather more pleasant.

So, I try to flash the firmware. I download the firmware from the D-Link site and try to use the web-interface to flash it, but it says the file format is invalid. I've checked the APRouter website, and their firmwares end in .bin, which is the same as the D-Link ones, so it's not even a simple extension check.

So, I need to flash the firmware by some other means. Is there any way that I can do this? I'd also rather not brick the router if it can be avoided.

I'm trying to get in touch with the marketplace seller, so it may be that I just send it back and get a replacement or refund, but if anyone can figure a way for me to fix it then that would probably be quicker and easier.

Some routers you can serial into them and get them to boot from ROM, then flash the firmware. Though if it's a £15 one I doubt this is easily done or indeed worth it. Just send it back, if it didn't explicitly say when you bought it that it'd have non standard firmware on, you're well within your rights to do so. Also if it doesn't work as well as the standard firmware then you could argue it's not of merchantable quality and can also return it with legitimate reason.
