The mobo is an elite k7s6a rev one who's manual is here:
http://www.ecsusa.com/downloads/manual_k7s.html

The casse is generic - no manual. It has two 5 hole USB connectors marked USB1 and USB2 the lead from the front USB ports (the rear USB pots work fine).

The USB connectors were plugged into 'USB3' on the mobo - i have also now tried them in LUSB1 and LUSB2.

Whetever combination Device Manager (WinXP) shows an unknown device. If i uninstall and then reinstall it finds a USB device but can't load it properly (says no drivers loaded)

What i am still not sure about is what gets plugged inwhere. For instance all the USB locations on the mobo have 10 pins (2x5) - however are they supposed to support just one USB device or 2? I assumed 2 as the case USB connectors only come with 5 pins each.

I found this http://www.pctechguide.com/tutorials/MBoard_USB.htm that seems to say each USB connector should be 8 to 10 pins - so how come i only hvae 5?

I have tried reversing the way i put on the connectors but no change.

Thanks

1.1 would work fine, sounds like USB 1.0.

The USB 1 and USB 2 just refer to what bank of USB ports it connects to on the case.

Thanks guys

Not sure I have go this right but what I think you are saying:

USB1.0 – used a 5 pin connect
USB1.1 – used a 10 pin connector
Mobo is 1.1
Case is 1.0, therefore incompatible

or am i off the mark here?

If this is right is there any way to get the front USB port to work or is it a hopeless case without replacing the USB port in the case and the USB case wiring?

thanks

1.0 and 1.1 use different voltages and pins and are not compatable as far as I know.

1.1 and 2.0 are however.

thanks

no way to get the front USB ports working at all then other than replacing them with 1.1? Not at home now so can't check but can you replace USB pots in cases - do OCUK sell spares?

If the are 1.0 then I do not think there is a way, they may not be though.

I do not think OcUK sell them in that sense, although they may sell a PCI slot adapter, would have to have a look.
