Problem installing 7870

Hi

I've got a P7P55D, i7 860, 8gb ram, W7 Pro 64bit, coolermaster 650w PSU

I'm upgrading from a 5850 to a 7870 - I've never had a problem upgrading a graphics card before.

I initially didn't bother deleting any drivers and just took out the 5850 and installed the 7870, booted up and all looked fine until I got through to the desktop and the screen was covered in artifacts I could just make out that the drivers were being installed automatically but then they kept crashing, the screen would blink and return full of artifacts.

Rebooted in safe mode and saw that the card was only recognised as a VGA card with VGA drivers, everytime I tried installing a driver it came up with detection driver not found as an error. In safe mode there were no artifacts on screen though albeit at a low resolution. I've deleted all the AMD drivers using the old card but it hasn't made any difference.

I can't work out if the card is faulty or if I'm screwing up the install - any help gratefully received - note I am not a PC geek ;) I will get a chance to test on another PC on Monday.

I believe so - it takes 2x 6pin PCIe power cables - although it does specify 75w and I have no way of telling unless that is the standard for a PCIe cable:confused:

Take the card out, put your old one back and then remove all drivers, then remove the device from device manager, shut down and physically remove the card. Install new card and boot up, then install the new drivers from AMD's site.

+1. Are you able to try it in another pc?

I have done all of that previously bar remove the device from device manager - is that likely to make a difference?

Make sure it's seated properly in the pci-e slot, some cards can need a bit of force to get them fully seated. (also make sure there's no dust in the slot)

my old card works fine albeit any graphics intensive games are freezing on me hence upgrading the card - tomorrow I can try with another pc and the card may be borked I guess that's what I'm trying to find out.

could be, could be the motherboard as I've the got the pain in the arse 8gb ram installed but only 4gb usable issue...I'm taking the PC into the repair shop tomorrow - step one try the 7870 in another pc, if I need to swap it obviously I will but even if it's DOA I'm still going to get them to check the mobo, psu and ram on my pc and if the card is fine then something is obviously wrong in my current set up. I'm going to bet that the card is DOA but that there's also an issue with my mobo. This is called sods law.

Just to finish off I've tested the card in another pc with the same results so am swapping it for one that works. Never had a DOA before but always a first time for everything I guess.

64 bit or 32 bit os? can be overtightened cpu cooler or bent cpu socket pin/pins

test each stick of ram one at a time in the white ram slot, then repeat test for second white ram slot, just to see if all ram sticks are working,it will boot from either slot with just one stick

you should have uninstalled ati drivers first then popped your new card in,however ive just swapped cards in the past without issue( ahh see your new post doa)

Drivers do not make a difference changing between cards anymore. I have a test rig with both Nvidia and ATI drivers installed and just change cards on it all the time, easily done over 100 cards on this install of windows with no messing around with drivers!

All it does is after changing the card just one reboot and then I can test it!

Looks like I had a bad stick of ram which I assume was causing the pc to freeze and also post only 4gb usable. I'm thinking of replacing it with 2x 4gb to sit alongside the 2x 2gbs that work - is that ok?
