Didnt put it in CPU forum as im not sure anymore the cpu is causing the problem...but its what started it

anyway, specs are
asus a8n-sli
2gb corsair cl2
x1800xt
3 SATA hd

Ok so firstly i had my winnie 3200 running in there, everything was fine. I sold this cpu, so thought it would be a good idea to put the X2 3800 in my system that i had bought couple months ago, but never got round to installing.

I put it in but just hear a few beeps at the start and pc wont start. Luckily i have a spare opteron 146, stick that in there, and everything works fine.

Update the BIOS to the latest one as the 1 i had didnt have support for the x2. I put the X2 back in, and yay Bios screen, i go into bios and it says x2, so i try to start to windows, but it freezes on the black windows screen with the bar thing running at the bottom.

restart a few times, clear a few CMOS but still same problem. Unplug all HD's apart from the windows 1, take out a stick of RAM but still same thing. i go into boot menu and select safe mode, and it loads FINE.

so im thinking theres something up with the cpu...i put the opteron back in...and i get the same problem with that ! wont load past windows boot screen... but safe mode is fine. I go into boot menu and select last known configuration, and here i am.....

Will try sticking the x2 back in later.

anyone got any idea what could be causing this problem?

Im not 100% sure, but wouldnt this be a Windows problem?

I'd try a new install of windows on a spare HD, see if it works then.

ok well i came home and it was weird again...

it was working fine before under last known config, although for some reason MSN was uninstalled i think. i just re installed, restarted and everything was fine (also msn recently for some reason takes like 1 min to load up)

when i turned it on just now it froze at the windows screen again...restarted a couple times and still same, tried last known config and still same thing, went into safe mode FINE, restarted again last known config i think, and im in windows now...summin really weird is going on

it COULD be windows, but im not sure why it would be, as really all ive done is change the CPU, although i did flash a new BIOS and install new chipset drivers...

hmmm ill try copy all my stuff from the 3 HD's to 1 or 2 of them so i got 1 free and format that and install windows on it and see if it works, but thats so much work argh, might just buy a new HD to test lol
