Problem installing software on newly built pc

Hey everyone,

As the title says I've just built a new PC, nothing spectacular at all, just better than my old one! Anyway I'm running XP Home, for which one of my friends had the original install disc, so it's a legitimate copy and has been activated successfully.

However, I don't seem to be able to install any antivirus software that I download (and I've tried a fair few), and I also can't download and install Firefox or Chrome, so I'm stuck using IE. I also wasn't able to successfully download and install the nvidia drivers for my GFX, but luckily I had the CD with me with the drivers, and it installed fine off of that. However I did manage to download and install Steam, and it's working absolutely fine.

I don't really understand why this is happening, and I've tried various things to get it working, like downloading it onto other PC's and transferring it onto the PC in question to install, but it hasn't worked.

I've also tried various "acquired" versions of Windows 7 and Vista, and had pretty much the same problem, although Vista did manage to install Chrome.

Thought using a genuine OS would sort it, but it seems not, and I'm at my wits end with this problem, as I don't really want to use the PC online without antivirus software in particular.

Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated! Could it be a fault with any of the components?

If anyone needs more info on the PC specs let me know :) Cheers in advance!

When you say you can't install anything, what exactly does, or doesn't happen?

You say Firefox won't download, antivirus downloads but won't install, yet Steam did download and install? Does seem like an odd problem for a new build!

This couldn't be something wierd like there being two activated copies of Windows or something could it?

Well on the antivirus installs it downloads the .exe file, but then when I open it it'll come up with some sort of error, some have error codes which I've looked at but they don't help, i think its firefox that just says "File is corrupt".

One thing I have noticed is that on most of the downloads that end up not installing properly, the publisher isn't recognised when the windows dialogue box comes up with run save or cancel...

I seriously hope its not to do with the two activated copies of the same license :( can't afford Windows 7 yet!!

TBH it was just wild speculation about the Windows activation, I'm not sure if it is sophisticated enough to detect two activated copies, nor whether Microsoft would actually do anything about it.

From my limited experience I'd have thought errors are most likely due to a corrupt OS install or a memory issue?

Hopefully someone more knowledgable will be able to add something. :)
