The vista installation CD is already in the drive so i have no idea whats causing it.

This needs to go into Windows section really.

Have you ever installed Vista from the disk on this laptop before? It's quite easy to get round - just grab the drivers from the Laptops website and place on a USB stick and brose/select driver from there.

Sorry I'm still a little confused of the source of the Vista disk.. Did it come with the laptop or another machine?

My only thought on this is that if the disk was supplied with another machine then it may be built specifically for that machine with only the drivers it needs.

I would try getting your hands on another Vista install disk and use the Vista license on the back of the laptop. This should work fine. Remember though, if you are using OEM disk, these are tied to the machine they were supplied with so activation maybe a problem.

The laptop never came with any disks. The vista disk is an oem one i bought from No Competitors! a few years ago but it was not bought with any machine. I have also tried using my dads vista disk and the same thing still happens.

Is it something to do with the disk controller mode in the BIOS? IE set to AHCI when it needs to be set to IDE? I seem to recall something like that creating these kinds of problems.

You are entitled to one set of backup disc's, other than the ones they supply with you system. As for your drivers, you can get them from here, http://support.euro.dell.com/support/index.aspx
