Problem installing Windows XP

Hi,

My mums laptop had a problem so I decided to back everything up and reinstall Windows XP.

Backed everything up fine and then inserted windows xp disc and went to boot from CD.

It got to the drive selection page fine and I told it to format the drive as FAT32(Its only 30gb). It got to around 80% and failed so I decided to take the drive out and put it in a USB caddy. I then formatted the drive on my PC and put the drive back in the laptop.

Now the laptop recognises the HDD, I select "dont format leave as it is" and it starts to copy the Windows installation files to the disc, but when it gets to drivers.cab it says error can't copy the file due to CD or HDD error.

The CD works fine as Ive tried it in my PC and Mac and it spins up fine and reads fine. The HDD was formatted and works fine as far as I know, so waht could it be? Dodgy DVD drive? Anyway I can try another DVD drive to install it from or would I have to buy one to try it?

Possibly, might go ask a friend otherwise Ill try n grab a cheap USB DVD drive from somewhere and sell on an auction site if I dont need it
 
Using it as Fat32 so my mac can read/write over the network to it :)

Just realised, will an external DVD drive work on USB1.0 or is it too slow to read?
 
How do I network boot off a DVD drive?

I assume share the DVD drive on other computer, F8 on bootup of laptop and should be an option and it will pick the DVD drive up automatically?

I started to take the laptop apart before to see if it was easy to swap over the internal DVDrw, took me about 15-20minutes to get all screws out and get the plastic bottom off. Turned out I was doing it to the wrong laptop ha! idiot :/ Gonna try again later tonight anyway!

Thanks for the offer edscdk, im in the north unfortunately! I'll try and find out if its USB bootable as Ive got a 4gb USB pen and Ill test the HDD out in the USB caddy Ive got for it :)
