Hi all

Strange problem really. Last night PC shutdown after doing some windows updates and was running smoothly before then. This morning I go to turn it on and I get nothing. No fans, no lights or anything.

Stripped it out and tested PSU on another pc and it works fine.

Put it all back together and then unplugged components one by one and tested.

It came to the GPU's - I have two Gtx470s that normally run in SLI mode. Once I took both of these cards out - there is power.

So

Is it a problem with both the cards? Or the motherboard?

I've tried each card in all four of the PCIe slots and nothing. When they are both out, the pc seems to boot, but can't confirm cause I have no GPU!

Any advice appreciated.

- CPU: Intel Core i7 3820 3.60GHz @ 4.40GHz Ivybridge CPU
- Motherboard: Gigabyte X79-UD3 Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard
- RAM: Patriot Intel Extreme Masters 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel

PSU is a stock 1000watt bought from ******** last year

The PSU is a ******** own brand, 1000w

My question is, why would it suddenly stop working, overnight, without anyone touching anything?! Seems weird.

Okay so now I've tried an older card in the system and now it boots up fine to windows.

Potentially indicates a problem with my 470s right?

I upgraded my old pc by getting an OCUK bundle, and the 470's were in that system with the 1000w PSU.

It is of course highly possible that the new MOBO, mem etc is drawing more power than the old one, but if that is the case then why would both the 470's work in the new system at first and then suddenly stop working overnight?

UPDATE - i have now put the older card (8800GTS) in AND 1 x 470 and the system boots up.

This is very strange!

I see what you mean. Both of the 470 cards worked in the old system, and for a short period of time in the new system and the same for the PSU.

This morning it booted up with one older card and one 470. Seems to be a very inconsistent set of problems, with no real suspect! Any other ideas as to what it might be?

I think it's faulty motherboard. The PSU works in another pc absolutely fine, and I also did the 'Hotwire' test on it and worked fine.

The power on switch/cable also works on another PC.

I took everything out of the case and rebuilt outside it. Even at bare minimum (no GPU, HDDs, peripherals etc the pc will not boot up. No fans or anything.

Any other suggestions? Many thanks for your help so far
