Problem running DVD under Win XP?

When I try and run a DVD film on my old laptop running win XP profesional it says its not able to run it? I would have thought this was an essential with Media player? How do I get the right codex to make it to work? Any help would be much appriciated.

Windows XP has no built-in DVD codec as you have discovered. There is no freebie one available either, as far as I know, though I haven't tried VLC player as suggested above. You will need to buy a program that comes with one included (like PowerDVD) or rip the DVD to a different format on your HD.
