HI,

Trying to help a friend out, getting stumped at the moment and need a bit of help from you peeps.

trying to move across a hard disk from one system to another and load winxp, problem is setup starts but mid way thru it BSODS, not had chance to copy the error down at the mo, just wondered if any one has any obvious ideas.

disk works fine on her system and can install winxp fine, try to move it across with winxp installed and it either bsod's straight off on boot, or asks for the winxp cd to be installed, do that and it bsod's  :(

thx

This is very difficult to do because the hardware in both computers is totally different.

But why install Windows on another computer and transfer the harddisk?

cos it wouldnt install on the other system, just wanted to make sure it would install then just wanted to see if it would run.

cant even seem to get the hard disk to setup with winxp and get it to format or anything on the other system

You either have a memory issue or a connectivity problem on the new machine.

Two common issues with the bootable Windows installation.

tried 2 sticks, and 1 at a time, tried different ide cables in different slots on the mobo, any other ideas ?

not sure if i'm correct but im sure i've read somewhere that if u have a h/d and move it to another system, again not sure if it matters if you try to use the winxp install on it or u're trying to format/reload, that if u can load it on a system u can make changes within device manager to the hard drive settings which help stop bsod's, anyone else seen anything similar ?

Firstly, check the memory by using mem86 and see if you have any errors.

Secondly, If you are having problems reading files off the CD, copy its contents to the HDD and install via the Winnt setup files in the I386 directory by booting the machine up with a win 98 boot disk or something.

thats what I would do anyway.
