Problem with 780ti cards

Hi all,

I've been having some issues with various 780ti graphics cards. It's a bit of a story. Initially I had an MSI reference 780ti installed in my PC. I upgraded to a 980ti and sold the 780ti on Amazon.

1 week before the return period was due to expire, the buyer returned the card saying it was defective. I accepted the return and, sure enough, it would not longer boot in my PC.

So I RMA'd the card. MSI were nice and helpful and sent me a brand new 780ti.

I then sold the 780ti, on Amazon again, and it was returned to me as the buyer said I had advertised it as an overclocked edition.

So... I still had this 780ti. I then sold it at a bargain basement price of £100 to a friend of a friend. 1 month later he advises that he's experiencing pixelation and distortions at boot.

So I RMA'd the card (again) on his behalf as I felt bad about selling him a card that broke after a short period. MSI obliged (again) and sent another brand new card that I gave to the buyer.

I have received another message today stating that this card has also failed (FFS)... It surely cannot be the 780 ti that has failed (3rd card in a row dead?) on its own accord.

So, does anyone have any ideas on what could be killing the GPUs? I'mm starting to doubt that MSI will accept a 3rd RMA....

what PSU is he using ? Thats the first port of call with any GPU issue imo.

Quite often i have found with RMA they dont actually test the item you send back certainly not straight away and just send another out. I had this with corsair and my PSU they send another out the day they got mine back and when i asked what was wrong they said they have not even looked at it yet (2 weeks after i had my RMA replacement) so there might not have even been an issue with the 2nd one you sent back.

Have you tried the GPU in your machine.

No I've not tried it in my machine. Both cards were handed over sealed in their packaging. I've asked him what PSU he's using but he's not online at the moment to respond.

Basically saying that the card works fine for a period and then, completely out of the blue, it won't boot and the screen is heavily distorted. I'm assuming that the PSU is frying the 780ti but thought you guys might have some shared experience here :)

it could be that his PSU is getting too hot or overloaded after a little while. If its a unbranded of any wattage or <500 watt branded psu then i would say its a likely cause.

Agreed. I've asked for more info on the PSU to see if that sheds some light on this. I'll update the thread once I get more info.

Oh I should ask - if the PC will no longer boot, would this be indicative of the GPU being killed or do you think that a replacement PSU could... resolve the issue. (Not got high hopes for the latter).

OK that's the PSU being tested by some IT firm. Seems like a good plan although what exactly they are going to test it for I don't know.

Soon find out if the PSU is defective or whether its something else.

OK, got an update :)

My friend got his PC tested by an independent IT firm to attempt to find where the issue was.

The results were as follows:

1) Graphics card worked fine and passed hardware tests when in their test configuration.
2) Motherboard works fine on built in vga and passes test
3) PSU tested and no faults found

but... Put the two (mobo & GPU) together and it does the same thing (fails).

He put the same GPU in another computer entirely.. and it started working again only to then fail again a few days later...

Now, the only shared component was the PSU in the two computers BUT it's (the PSU) been independently tested and has no faults as per the testing firm...

Confused :) Any ideas? I've asked him to provide a DXdiag dump for more info.

Have you found out what PSU it is yet?

/Edit: 780Ti's need 42 Amps on the 12v rail preferably on a single rail.

Yes - got it. It's a Corsair CX600 non-modular version. The IT firm, he tested it all with a multimeter, and then max power consumption tested it without issue on his test rig.

Also - the mobo in use is a DELL Vostro 420 G45A01. Not sure if useful?

That looks to have a single 12v rail of 46 Amps so theoretically should be OK but from what you've said it does look to be the possible issue even though it's passed some tests.
