Had this a few years now (Acer Aspire 5633WLMI) and (apart from lots of BSOD's) it is fairly screwed up.

It turns itself off randomly but i'm not sure whether that is due to overheating.

I've taking the casing off and even though in this pic it's not spinning, it is now and has been for a while. I'm guessing the CPU is under this? or is it under the heatpipe?

Also, the battery only lasts about 8 minutes, so i'm guessing that's b0rked?

Just installing vista now, will let you know how long it takes to install.

Any ideas what could be troubling this laptop?

EDIT: Don't want to install vista, apparently the files on the disc are corrupt. Funny how it installed on this machine fine, yesterday.

The cpu is under the X shaped clamp.

I suggest unscrewing the clamp and then the fan housing and, in theory, the whole heatsink assembly will come out. Give it a good clean, reapply some paste and put it back on.

Dont do this if you arent 100% sure about what you are doing as its easy to crack the cores on those cpus as they dont have an integrated heatshield like desktop cpus do now.

That looks well clogged, as Atreus says after cleaning and repasting with a thin layer of paste just nip the heatsink screws up, should be numbered in the order to do them.
