Problem with AMD overclock

Hello

I've read lots of guides and whatnot for my first overclock and can't seem to get past 3.6Ghz for my 3.2 Ghz Phenom ii x4 955 BE.

I'm overclocking by increasing the multiplier in steps till I BSOD then would apply increased vcore from 1.4v to 1.425 and so on.

But after an hour or two on Prime 95 at 3.7 I would BSOD so naturally I increased the vcore, but no matter what level I increased it too I cannot get it to stable. I tried 3.8ghz at 1.55vcore and it would bsod within 10 seconds of starting prime.

I've read on some forums that it might be ram speeds or something else which is causing the problems.

I don't think it's heat causing the problem, since it doesn't go above 50c before it crashes.

My mobo is Gigabyte GA-890FX-UD5
Ram is 8GB of:
Dominator 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
+
Patriot Viper 2 Sector 5, 4GB (2x2GB) 2250MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit

Any help would be appreciated as I would love to get stable 3.8Ghz as I feel my setup should be achieving it easily.

Thanks

Oh I've also replaced the stock cooler with a 20 quid aftermarket and artic 5 thermal paste and it idles at 32c and maxes out at 58c using AMD overdrive stability test, 62c on prime95 torture test. Main problem there is the cpu fan's max RPM is 1800 :( But is the only 20 quid air cooler that fits onto my mobo. But like I said heat is not the problem at the mo....

You're running pretty hot there, the max temperature I'd feel comfortable with running that chip at is 62C. Some say that some of the AMD chips are good to 72C, but above 62C stability goes downhill, so I think heat may well be the issue.
Have you tried any different BIOS versions? The UD5 seems to be a bit fiddly, some BIOS revisions work great with some chips but can't manage even a simple overclock with others.

Like I said it blue screens before it hits 50c so doesn't get hot enough. and it takes ages to hit 62c which is the max it goes at.

No not tried using different bios versions, do you know which ones to try?

Also I'm using the AMD overdrive tool to test my overclock before doing it in the bios.

Hmm what does C2 or C3 mean?

Here's a snapshot of my cpu stats

Yeah my ram slots are all filled out and I use on average 20-30% and even when playing games it rarely goes to 45%+ so don't really use the extra ram. Will take it out and try.

Nope not tried upping the NB voltage, is that the NB Vid option?

Here's where I test everything out. I tried doing it in the BIOS but had the same results. It's easier doing it here I find.

I think F2 or F3 was what I had to use in the end for some stubborn CPUs.

Ah I'm on F5 bios at the mo. Not meaning to sound retarded but how do you install a BIOS? I downloaded the F6 to install and it kept on saying 'error' could not install. Do you need to load it onto ta usb stick and update it on the bios set up screen or something?

have you updated ya bios to F6?

I've heard in F6 the multiplier only runs in whole numbers and doesn't give 18.5, 19.5 etc.

Also Serpah I've taken the extra ram out, x19 multi, 1.45vcore and bsod. upped to 1.475 and bsod. increased the NB vcore by 025 and bsod, again by 050v with same cpu volts and bsod...

Only difference I've noticed by taking the ram out is I've got a stable 3.7ghz at 1.425 but can't go higher....

Don't the updated bios versions incorporate the earlier versions?

on the F3 bios specs it says
Improve AMD PhenomII CPU performance & memory OC ability

Maybe I should try this out
