Problem with apple keyboard. keys do different thing please help

My friend has an imac 2009. when he presses the volume button on the keyboard it brings up the widgets and other buttons do other thing. He first thought it was the keyboard but he has had it replaced and still the same thing happens

Press apple button menu on the top left, go to system preferences, Keyboard and then the keyboard short cuts option.

From there you can configure what each of the function keys do so they match up to your keyboard (opposed to what the mac assumes you have). Helpful if you upgrade a macbook and it gets confused which keyboard you have too.
