Problem with brand new build.

Hi guys I went agianst my better judgement and went ahead with buying parts and trying to build my own PC. I knew something was bound to go ****-up and I already have a problem I am hoping someone may be able to help with.

I finished my build this morning, followed a few guides and such. Everything went (seemingly) smoothly so I didn't encounter any problems along the way that I can refer back to...

I turn the system on and I only get a very brief moment of power before everything goes off. The lights all come on and the case fan spins but it lasts no longer than it takes to blink. I have checked everything is connected properly and everything seems fine.

The only thought I had was I noticed in my small bag of case accessories (screws etc) there were some very small circular things that can only be described as washers or something. I'm thinking maybe I need those somehow on the motherboard screws or the case screws that the mobo sits on. Maybe they stop 2 metals from touching that cause it to short out?

Any help would be hugely appreciated!

I doubt you need the washers as at least 50% of cases I've used don't have any for use with the screws.

Did you plug the 24 pin and 4/8 pin power cables into the motherboard?

Yes I plugged in the cables between PSU and mobo. I'll give it the old 'unplug and plug back in' trick to see if they were not in properly, but they seem okay.

are all the mobo stands in place and secured to the mobo.

memory secure in there slots, graphics card seated correctly with its power connectors in securly if it needs them.

if all that looks ok disconnect anything you don't need to boot the system, so your left with boot drive, 1 stick of memory , graphics card and see if that boots.

Many thanks for the prompt help guys.

I made sure the 2 PSU connectors were in the mobo correctly and they were.

Also I can note that the case fan spins within the brief moment, as does the CPU fan, and even when it's turned straight back off the little lights within the GRX card remain on.

I'll try just booting with the mobo, with some ram out now.

I'd suggest removing the mobo from the case. Place it on the box it came in, keep the case close by so you can get the psu cables and chassis cables to the mobo.

It's possible the case is shorting out, taking the mobo out of it will elimate that as the cause. Don't panic, sometimes parts can be DOA. You might just be unlucky, try that first. Can you test the PSU in another rig?

I solved it. It was a very, very simple mistake of not connecting the 2nd motherboard 4pin cable from the psu, I had only connected the larger one. I get wound up too easily and start panicking but without the feedback here I could have fretted all day.

Thanks for the feedback and to whom mentioned to check this. On with the build!:D
