I had a strange issue with my PC yesterday, i was watching the live streams from E3 when suddenly my computer made this crackling sound and then the screen froze and the mouse and keyboard turned off.

I restarted the computer but while the screen had power it didn't start up and just stayed black, also the mouse and keyboard weren't getting power and lighting up. However the computers lights were working and all the fans were running. I tried several times restarting the computer but had the same problem every time, except for once when it showed the motherboard splash screen but stopped there.

I tried it again today and it started fine and seems to be running normal but i'm worried that the problems yesterday could be a sign something is on its last legs. The computer is about 4 years old but i haven't had and problems up until this point.

i was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction as to what the problem might be.

Computer:
Q6600 OC 3.2
4GB
abit ip35 pro off limits
GTX 560 Ti
Windows 8

could try clearing the cmos, leave out motherboard battery for 30minutes and then try

if you heard crackling chances are somethings shorted/fried/died

could try testing with onboard graphics if you have it/without graphic card

and try with another power supply

I'd start by making sure all cables are securely 'home'. However, if the sound came from the rear it's likely a power supply problem. Cheaper power supplies can take out other hardware with them when they fail so bear that in mind.

I checked the bios and saw that the OC for the processor had been removed, so i put it back on and the problem from yesterday returned. But without the OC the computer runs fine, so i guess the processors dying?
