Problem with dads computer - can anyone help?

Hi guys

My dads got a bit of a weird problem. Every time he right-clicks, his computer crashes (he gets the old 'send problem to microsoft' blahblahblah) - he's done a virus scan and spyware scan which has produced no problems. Someone on a news group said it could be the ram but I think the rams ok. Any suggestions?

What kind of mouse is he using? have you tried it with a different one?

If its just the mouse thats causing this, that would be the first thing I'd check. A short circuit in a PS2 mouse used to crash my old laptop before i replaced it.

Hope that helps.

PK!

Thanks for the reply, but its not the mouse. It only occurs when we're on the desktop, or in a folder (ie: it doesn't do it when you're in a web browser)...a bit puzzling!

I don't know if this'll help, but I've just done a 'hijackthis' test and here are the results...don't know if anyone can help by looking at this...

Run a system file integrity checker.

Open a run box - Windows+R or Start > Run

Type...
SFC /scannow

You could also try a check disk..

Open 'My Computer', right click the OS drive, click properties, select the Tools tab and run error checking.

You're running something which has tried to add an extension to the context menu, but hasn't got it right :)
Common culprits are archiving software (WinRar, WinZip etc.) & media players, but anything that adds extra options to the right-click menu can cause this.

Try updating the ATI drivers- I know they add one, & I'd also try SonicStage as well. Its really a process of trial and error until you find the program in question.

-Leezer-

Hi guys

I think my dad has found the culprit...he reformated his computer, and the problem started happening again when he installed the software for his digital camera...

leezer3 - if the camera had done this, is there any way to 'undo' it - we've uninstalled the software but the problem persists.

*Edit* - I rightclicked on our laptop (which also has the camera software on it) and it works fine...how very strange :(

To remove right click menu items:-

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

Click the the + sign next to the ContextMenuHandlers key, to expand it.
Now you will see some of the programs that have added items to your right-click menu. Simply delete the program keys you don't want.
