Hey All,

Just thought that I would let you know that I have just had an interesting (but none fruitful) conversation with a support person within Dell about the images that they are supplying with their SSD drives within their laptops.

Basically their images are (as I'm sure your aware) catered by their development department, but they have neglected to align the image to the 4k cluster boundary that SSD devices should be on as specified as standard.

What does this mean you might ask!

Besides a decline in system speed, SSD owners need to be concerned with degradation of the SSD memory cells. Because of the nature of an SSD, a misaligned disk creates an overbearing workload to read, modify and write to these drives, thus shortening the life of your SSD.

Both Vista and Windows 7 align their partitions within the 4k limit (but not XP, aligned on CHS).

Basically this means I would consider calling Dell and letting them know that your not happy about this!

Well I'm off to reinstall Windows 7 so that I can have a lot better speed and make sure that my SSD does not give up the ghost after a year.

I thought that I would make you all aware..

Stelly
