hi i have a gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R with 6 gig corsair xms3, problem is the mb is only recognizing 4 gig, every now and then it'll recognize the full 6 gig sometimes it'll only recognize 2 gig, is this a fault with the mb or the ram or is it a bios fault, thanks here's the full spec of my system

Ive had the same problem with the ASUS p6x58d-e.

The normal fix which has worked with other people with the same problem is to reseat the cpu and if you are using an aftermarket cooler with a rear mounted bracket to ensure there is are no metal parts in contact with the motherboard.

i've got it working, it seems the mb doesn't like using anything other than standard performance for the ram, i had it set to extreme and that's why i think it didn't work

I had this problem on my UD3R with OCZ Obsidian 6GB ram. Sometimes all 3 would work fine, but normally on a cold boot one would not be recognised (no matter which slot is was situated in). I RMA'd the ram and got a new pack back the next day, and its been fine since.

I've got the same problem

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R with i7 920 and 3x2Gb Patriot Viper 1600Mhz RAM

doesnt matter if the CPU is o/ced or not and doesnt matter if the RAM is at SPD, XMP or manual settings

Each time I boot it's a lottery as to how much RAM is usable - I've tried switching sticks around in the white slots and reseating the CPU (after painstakingly checking for bent pins - there arent any!) but I usually get 2Gb, sometimes 4Gb and occasionally all 6Gb usable

The annoying thing is that the PC is rock solid reliable and the RAM passes Memtest with flying colours no matter what settings are used and how much is currently recognised.

I'm still searching for a pattern or fix since I really don't want to have to RMA this board, apart from this niggly issue (which affects other boards too it seems) its the mutts nuts

I've got the same problem

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R with i7 930 and 3x2Gb Patriot Viper 1600Mhz RAM

On Cold boot it only shows 4 Gigs, I Just Press del to go into Bios, switch off then reboot and it Shows all 6 Gigs.

Works everytime, I was thinking maybe it was a Bios Fault and was waiting for an update.

i sent an email to the company i ordered the parts off explaining what's happening and here's their reply

"Hi,

This problem can often be caused by using an aftermarket cooler which causes the board to flex and the underside of the CPU (where the memory controller is located) to not interface directly with the pins on the motherboard's CPU socket.

If you have the original CPU cooler that was supplied in the Intel retail box see if this resolves the problem.

If not it is possible that one of the memory sticks is at fault."

i can't see it being this because i've never had the problem before and i've always had aftermarket coolers

mmm

I may try lying my tower case flat on it's side for a few days and see if that helps fix the problem. Although you would think that an intermittent problem like this that can be fixed temporarily by tweaking the BIOS wouldn't be caused by a "mechanical" issue. It's worth a try I guess :)

I dont really want to switch back to a stock cooler so I'll let you know if lying on it's side helps. At least if it does you may be able to get someone to sort your system to be lying sideways? :)

I think the FLEXING motherboard is a clutching at straws tbh.

It would be so intermittant if it was the case I think and would probably cause the PC to crash.

And how can i find a way to 100% get it to show all memory installed?

All very strange to be honest and I dont have the answers.

BTW my case is a media case so the Cooler is sat nicely Vertical.

Hope someone finds a solution.

Cheers

I had the same problem on the same mobo and after looking around I found ref to bent pins on CPU slot and reseating it.
I could not see any bent pins but that is very hard to see anyway when mobo in case, but after i reseated it, it reconised all ram and have not had problem since.

I've already reseated my CPU and that hasn't made any difference for me.

got my machine on it's side for the last 3 days, results so far:

Sunday cold boot - 2GB available
Sunday warm boot - 6GB available
Monday cold boot - 4GB available
Tuesday cold boot - 6GB available

All BIOS settings at performance defaults (ie stock CPU, XMP profile, onboard audio and floppy drive disabled). I won't even go into the BIOS screen over the course of the week so I can see what happens for normal use :)
