Problem with installing XP/Copying files

Ive had to reinstall XP due to a BSOD popping up everytime i started windows, although ive not added any new hardware (other than a monitor a few days prior - but cant see this causing the problem)

Anyways while copying the files to disk process is in motion before the actual installation of XP can begin, half way through copying in files it pops up with an error saying such an such a file cannot be copied. press a button to retry/press a button to skip/ or press a button to escape (anywhere between 25% - 60%)

I press the button to retry and it continues only for a second before the error comes up again, and then i just have to restart the computer and i end up going round in a big circle.

I thought it may be due to a scratched xp cd but iv tried a few different cd's - all giving me the same problem.

Iv tried installing on a different Hard drive (IDE this time not SATA) and still getting the same error.

Which leaves me thinking its possibly a dodgy dvd drive or bad ram, altho i got my ram 2 months ago OCR Reaper 2gig so im hoping its not that.

any ideas anyone? from a more than distressed user

could be..

ram
hd
dvd drive
windows disc
power supply

check in that order, try removing one stick of ram

Will try when i get home, got a sneaky suspicion it may be the psu or dvd drive, also any idea how long the memtest will take?

I tried the windows memory dianostic tool and it took longer than 10 hours so i stopped it

the bootable iso for memtest doesn't take that long at all, it's all dos based, but it loads itself, need to burn it to disc using imgburn or nero's burn image option

it's definitely some sort of ram problem. and yup, it's a good idea to try one stick at a time. also it might be worth playing with the latency/voltage settings in the bios. try the memory forum if you're not familiar with that. :)
