Problem with justify tool in word

Probably a noob question, but the last lines of each paragraph has massive spacing turning half a sentence into the width of a page.
If you get what I mean, surely a simple solution?

Place the cursor at the end of that line and hit return. If you need to close the white space you have just created between paragraphs, simply move the cursor to the beginning of the following paragraph and hit backspace. You probably held shift for some reason while hitting return.
