Current laptop is a Compaq Armada E500 (p3 900, 128mb ram, 20gig hdd)

Wanted to upgrade the memory, so check existing ram which is a Toshiba THLY12N01A75L stick, its PC133, SODIMM, 144pin, standard stuff...

I tried some spare memory at work (2x256), which when in on its own, the laptop refused to post (even to compaq logo) and the numlock, scroll and capslock lights just stay on, nothign else happening.

Tried a bios upgrade, still nothing, so bought some new sticks as we thought they were broken, still doesnt work...

odd thing is, with both the old and new mem, if the toshiba stick is in, and you put in any other stick, it would post, identify the new mem, and start loading windows2000, however not get all the way (when after the grey progress bar ont eh black background completed and the splash screen would usually load, it reboots, and gets stuck in this loop)

refuse to believe its 2 dodgy sets of memory... so what am I doing wrong? anyone ever had this? laptop specs online say it can take 2x256... so whats happening !?

GREATLY appreciate a quick reply on this, cheers guys

update -

just tried a spare 128mb stick from dads p2 400 dell lattitude laptop, and that works fine on its own + with the existing 128 stick... however, the exact same fault occurs on dads laptop when using this new memory, which is what happened when we found out that his laptop didnt support 256 mb dimms... so, even tho compaq say it can support 2x256, maybe it cant !

any idea on where i could get a newer bios update?
