I often have a problem with the left channel dropping out on my Sony CMT-CPX1. I can fix it if i give it smack, suggesting it's just a loose connection inside because it affects the speaker and headphones (i.e left channel of everything not just dodgy connection to the speaker). My question is, is it ok to open it up and have a look to see if i can find the bad connection?(with it switched off obviously) ....or is this just asking for trouble/and dangerous?!

No it will be OK as long as you avoid the area where the power is stepped down/ smoothed. As a precaution I would leave it off at the wall overnight (or 24 hours to be safer) to give the caps a chance to discharge somewhat.
I would also suggest leaving the device plugged in with the power OFF at the wall when working on it.
