Hi,

Recently got hold of a set of akg k7xx's, hooked them up to my asus stx and the volume seems wrong.

i'm using foobar 2000 and it can put that to 100% volume along with the stx and it sounds like a normal volume.

i've got speakers hooked up via the onboard optical link to an old yahama rx-v367 amp and the volume only needs to be 20-25% on foobar and the pc, with the amp on +2.0db (max is 16.5) for a reasonably loud volume.

am i just being an idiot and missing something on the stx controls ?

also tried reinstalling the uni drivers for the stx and it made no difference.

thanks,

Sounds to me like you haven't upped the gain setting. There's a hammer icon next to the analogue out box when you select headphones. Needs to be on high or extra high gain.

The "normal" setting shows as 64 ohms or less, the next is "high" which is 64-300 ohms, from what i could see online the k77x's are 62, or am i misinterpreting that in relation to the card ?

edit:

tried high/extra high and thats done the job, i'd had a look around and it showed the k7xx's to be around 60 ohms ?, i take it the high/extra high won't cause any issues with the headset, not sure how the setting works so just wanted to check.

cheers

Yeah, the Kxx are 62 Ohm, but Ohm rating doesn't tell the whole story. You can get efficient headphones that are require less power and inefficient headphones that need more power to get good volume. A lot of AKG's full size headphones are inefficient, so although they are only 62 Ohm, they need more power than say Beyerdynamic DT770 250 Ohm.
