My friends new £470 280 arrived today and he went to install it but it doesn't seem to be working. He told me over the phone that there is a red light at the back of the card and in the manual this means one or more of the power leads are disconnected but he tells me they are plugged in, both the 6 and 8 pin.

I can't really go around to have a look myself just yet so does anyone have any ideas?

Cheers.

Don't have a 280 but at a guess..

Power supply not high enough wattage for his system.

Try using a power cable exclusively for the video card that isn't connected to other parts.

All same parts work fine with old graphics card?

Tell him to try unplugging anything unnecessary to POST (all drives etc) and see if that works. If it does, it could be that his PSU is too weak.

Surely any PSU which has both a 6 pin pci-e cable and a 8 pin cable should be able to run this card?

He hasn't plugged in the 8 pin motherboard cable has he? (not sure if it will fit)

No guarantee. 8 pin psu came out before the beast of the GTX280 came out.

Plus depends what else is in the case. He might have 6 hard drives, 2 optically, watercooling pump, sound card, network card, tv card etc.

He has a 3GHz Duo (E8400?), one HDD, a £100 creative sound card that takes a lead from the PSU, 2 optical drives. That is it I think.
