Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had any idea as to why my graphics card might have practically stopped working on my laptop?

Its a 540M, been going well for nearly 2 1/2 years with no dramas at all then one day decided to play up.

I'm getting what looks like cubes dancing around in where images should be on games. It has trouble even loading the image in the Nvidia control panel. I have tried re-installing the original driver but that hasnt done anything. It cant even play super meat boy which is pretty.....terrible.

Any help or advice would be good. If you would like me to post a picture of what it looks like when its trying to load a game then I will.

Thanks

Try installing MSI Afterburner (the latest one from Guru3D downloads section) and set it up to monitor the GPU temperatures. Run a game or a benchmark and take note of the temperatures.

What you are experiencing sounds like artificating which can either down to a temperature issue, voltage or possibly a borked GPU.

If after running Afterburner you note the temperatures are very high try cleaning out the fan(s) and ventilation slots on the laptop (if you havn't done so already).

Without knowing which laptop you have it is difficult to advise further but you may want to look at repasting the GPU (& CPU while you are it) with decent thermal compond. Of course this last point only applies if you are seeing high GPU temps.

Summary:

1) Check GPU temps
2) Clean out fans / intakes
3) re-paste GPU/CPU

If doing this makes no difference and/or the temps arn't an issue it could very well be the GPU is borked. Hopefully this isn't the issue but unfortunately the 540M will be soldered onto the laptops Mainboard so there is only so much that can be done.

thanks for that reply, will look into it further but i wont hold my breath. Upgrading to a full on gaming rig soon anyway. :)
