I have a problem with my laptop, a few months ago I turned it on and I had a message on start-up which said that there was a missing or corrupt file within windows - I booted off the windows CD, did a repair and nothing happened. In the end I decided to re-install windows using the recovery disc I got with my laptop. Everything went well and windows reinstalled, I used it for about 2 hours to do some work, turned it off and when I came back the next morning, and I got another message along the same lines as the original. I have since re-installed windows using both a normal Windows disc and the recovery disc and exactly the same has happened each time.
The last few times this message has popped up has been after a BSOD in windows - this has happened at random times whilst doing random things, sometimes it has popped up after 5 mins, other times I can use the laptop for a few days before it happens, but ultimately, it happens. I want to get the laptop fixed (if possible) because I have some plans for the future where it might come in handy. I turned it on today and I got the following message on boot up:
Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
My research into it today showed that the message means I have a corrupted registry, but all efforts to fix the problem haven't worked. Even the solutions from Microsoft themselves didn't work. My conclusion is that the entire windows installation is corrupt, not just the registry. I formatted the hard drive using killdisk and tried a reinstallation of windows (again), at the point where I was asked for the serial number I got yet another BSOD with the following error code:
STOP: 0x000000f4 (0x00000003,************)
There was more to the code, but it shutdown before I could get the rest. When I restarted the laptop it resumed the setup as if nothing had happened and has successfully installed windows (now I'm just waiting for it to crash again!).
Since the installation I have run hardware diagnostics on the hard drive and the RAM and both tests have come back ok.
I was wondering if anyone has any other suggestions as to what could be causing these problems. My main suspicion is that the processor has suffered some sort of heat damage and isn't working 100%. Any suggestions and comments would be greatly appreciated, I also apologise for such a long thread, but I wanted to make sure all the background info was there.
Thanks in advance
