I installed it in his new PC and my existing PC and in both device manager sees it as only a "std VGA graphics adapter". Why is it not recognised?

The install disc he got does not recognise the card and won't load drivers.

All my other cards (NV admittedly) show up straight away as 8800, 480 etc.

Am i missing something silly?

It does boot fine and the screen looks OK, its just not recognised in windows.

Both machines run win 7.

Any ideas?

Tried other PCI slot?
Loaded drivers up from website?

Same issue in 2 different machines. One of which is not faulty.

Do i need drivers before the card shows as anythign other than std vga gfx device in device manager?

Any 7970 owners know?

Could also be you have some old AMD drivers interfering, try run windows in safe mode and run driversweeper and delete all amd drivers for any videocards you have used. Then reboot in normal mode and get latest drivers off amd site.

Had a guy I Sold my reference 7970 to before I got my gigabyte 7970 windforce with same problem as you, he got it fixed doing the steps I suggested above.

Surely the ones they provided must at least work?

Just had a thought.

Right click My Computer

Top left - Device Manager.

Right click on the Standard VGA adapter.

Click the Details tab.

Drop down to Hardware IDs

You should be showing Dev_6798. That's a Radeon 7970. Your Vendor may be (or VEN) 1002.

If neither of those match then you're not looking at the Radeon.

Both pc's have no old AMD drivers on them at all.

His new PC has the ones from the disc only.

Will try the latest tomorrow.

Cheers everyone.

Have to admit that very poor tho IMO. Supplied drivers that don't even work!

Not being nasty mate but no one installs the drivers from the disc. They're usually woefully out of date. Nigh on every manufacturer will tell you to go and get the latest ones from AMD/Nvid.

I don't even get the driver disc out 9/10 times.

Generally they're the original ones that were out when the card was released (As the 7970 is not days old there will be lots of fixes in the latest drivers from AMDs site)

FYI my mate doesn't have the internet yet. VM are late as usual! Hence using the disc he got with the card. I am just trying to help him trouble shoot.

I will put the latest drivers on tomorrow.

Cheers

So we have a new clean install of Win 7. Plus Mobo drivers and latest AMD drivers of their website. Driver install completes successfully.

Card boots PC fine and display looks OK but shows as "standard vga graphics device" in device manager.

Tried card in 2 PC's and its the same in both machines.

Ideas?
