Problem with my new Macbook Pro

Hi guys

I'm an owner of a brand spanking new Macbook Pro (arrived today) and unfortunately I'm having major problems getting the thing online. Whenever I try to connect it via wifi, it will connect to my wireless router, however it will tell me that it 'can't connect to an IP address' and it won't connect to the internet (despite actually being connected to the router). Suspecting this was a router problem, I ran an ethernet cable straight from the cable modem into the MB Pro and I get an error about it being a 'self-assigned IP' - and again it won't connect. It's becoming pretty frustrating as I can't for the life of me work out what's going on. Any ideas?

What is showing in the network section in system preferences? any ability to post a screen shot?

it might for some reason be set a manual ip address, it will connect but won't use DHCP to grab itself an IP?

Thanks for the reply. It's not set manually, it's set to get the info automatically, however as it won't get an IP address, the field is blank. I have also tried to put the info in manually using the IP details from my router but this didn't work unfortunately.

Look in the network settings panel.
Just set it all to DHCP assuming your router usually assigns IP addresses this way.

As for skipping your router: Assuming you're on Virgin, you would need to turn off your Macbook AND your Cable Modem for a few minutes before you boot them up. Or it wont work.

If you can't get an address from your router (using an ethernet cable) then either the laptop is junk (unlikely) or your router is badly configured.

You don't give us any details so not a lot we can do.

Thanks for the reply. You're right, I am with Virgin. I turned both of them off (it was probably for about half an hour or so whilst I went out), and when I came back and turned them on I still had the same problem.

Under the TCP/IP settings, under the 'configure IPv4' tab it is on 'Using DHCP'. There is a button to renew the DHCP Lease, which doesn't appear to do anything. There is also nothing populated in the IPv4 Address, Subnet Mask or router field.

It is a Linksys WRT54G. I have also tried it using another wireless router (I'm not sure of the make, I think it was Netgear) and it didn't work. I have one desktop PC and two laptops (all three are Windows based) which connect to the Linksys without a problem though.

Even though I don't know what the problem is, I'm fairly sure it's not the router, as I have tried it wired up to the modem directly as well and it still didn't work.

Try it with the following settings if you are able:

no wireless encryption/auth (Wireless setting)
always broadcast on (DHCP setting)
don't hide network (Wireless setting)
802.11G only (Wireless setting)

Thanks for the advice. I have tried the above, but unfortunately it doesn't work. I have made some progress though - it will connect when I connect a cable straight from the modem to the macbook (I tried this last night and it didn't work). It still won't work if I try over wifi, or if I run a cable from the router into the macbook. Maybe I need a new router.....

Check you have the latest firmware, obviously, and try it with a WEP password.
I have the same router back home and have never had problems connecting to it on any Mac.
