Problem with my Pipex connection

I have an ongoing problem with my Piex connection. I get very slow speeds, down as low as 30kbps. It started back in July, and it was resolved in September after hours of time spent on the phone chasing their technical support to get it sorted.

I started getting speed around 3.2mbps which was fine.

Now the problem is coming back, and I am going through the same old process (referred to BT etc etc)..

I have noticed something though. If I turn off my router and leave it for five minutes (seems only to work if I leave it a certain length of time) I get fast speeds back. What would be causing this?

I recently stayed at my mum's house for a week and had all my computer stuff with me, with no problems on her BT connection. I didn't have to do restarts or anything like that.

It's what it says on the tin - Pipex reduce your speed (especially at peak times) to discourage heavy users and make sure that everyone gets a share of what little resources Pipex pay for.

It could be one of a million things causing your reduced speeds though - it might not be traffic shaping (AKA throttling). Tried running a BT Speedtest (instructions in sticky) while it's slow?

I've just been doing speed tests on Think Broadband. Sometimes it won't even do a test, it just hangs there.

Then when I disconnect, leave for 5 mins, then reconnect, the speedtest usually comes up with 3.2mb or thereabouts.

The BT speedtest never says anything other than fast speeds, but I know I have problems because I connect to a server giving continuous stock market quotes, and that gets screwed up when my connection drops to 30k!

Could be a build-up of errors on the card at the exchange, getting reset by a router reboot (i.e. a resync). Similarly, high error levels/temp files/junk building in the router itself can cause this on some routers and some firmware versions.

Or, as was said above, it could just be good old fashioned throttling. Does it affect all services (eg http, ftp, nttp, torrents), or just one or two?

Are you on an interleaved connection? I'm presuming you're on ADSL Max given your quoted throughput. What are your router connection stats (SNR, attenuation etc)? Post up a BT speed test too.

Hi,

Have been away for a while, hence the delay.

How do I post my stats up on here?

Also, again I have noticed that the cure is to reboot the router. I've just had to do it in fact. Is this a problem with my equipment?

Thanks
