Problem with Netgear WNP311 config software

Hi,

I have bought a wireless router (Netgear DG384PN), and a Netgear WNP311 PCI Adapter for an old PC I have. Despite being old the PC meets the specs in for the adapter (Pentium II, Windows 98SE, PCI 2.2, plenty of disk space). The card installs with no problems. It shows as working in and Device Manager, with the latest driver, and no conflicts. However the configuration software (wlancfg5.exe) just hangs when I execute it. After about 10 seconds of 'hour glass' nothing. I look in Program Manager and it shows the program as running, but it eventually goes as 'Not reponding'.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be? Does the router need to be up and running for the software to work? (I wouldn't have thought this to be the case).

Cheers,

Any ideas anyone?

I've been dong a bit of googling and found thata there I am not the only one to experience problems with the Netgear software, especially on 98SE. I see that on XP there is some OS software that you can use to configure your card, but form what I've read there is not an equivalent on 98SE. Is there any othe software, freeware or otherwise, that can used to configure the WPN311?

Cheers

Go Start > Run > "services.msc" and look for Windows Zero Config or something along those lines.. not sure if it runs in 98SE.

I suspect it should be disabled if your using netgear software. If its not try disabling it and running the software again.

If it is disabled you could enable it and use windows to manage your wirelessness. but again im not sure how well 98SE manages that :)

I've not looked yet, but from what I've read WZC is only available in XP. I'll have a look tomorrow and report back.

I've given up with the Netgear kit now. I've read elsewhere on the net that other people have had trouble with the Netgear software (on both 98SE and XP).

I'm taking the stuff back to OC and thinking I'll probably get something from Linksys to replace. Their products also say they support 98SE, so I'll give them a try.

Hi,

Did exactly that. Paid my fist visit to OC (their only about 20 miles from me). No problem returning goods, or getting replacements. Great service.

Went for the Linksys kit, as stated, and this seems to have installed okay and software is working :)
