Problem with new build

Hi all.

I'm building a new system for a friend and have a strange power issue.

Everything is installed and plugged in correctly as far as I can see.

When I press the power button on the case the motherboards lights flash once and the PSU fan nudges a bit but nothing else happens. This is the first press of the power button only, any other presses results with nothing but if I disconnect from the mains and reconnect it will do the above again and then nothing.

The only idea's I have come up with is either a Faulty PSU, Faulty Motherboard or a Faulty power lead from the case but I'm sure I'm missing something obvious hence why I'm asking here.

The system is:

Antec 902 Case
GA-EP31-DS3L Motherboard
OCZ 700W Stealth Xtreme PSU
Q8200 CPU - Stock heatsink & Fan (Not being overclocked)
XFX HD 4870 Graphics card
Asus Xonar sound card
4 gig Corsair XMS2

Also it is a completely fresh build so no operating system yet.

Any idea's?

Thanks

Could be any number of things, including shorting on the case (you did remember standoffs?) take all out of case and try booting with minimal things plugged in, psu->mobo->cpu->1 stick RAM

Robinho_Skills - There are 4 lights on the board called Phase LED, 1 is green the other 3 I think are red (They only light up briefly) all 4 light up at once for a split second. The manual states the Phase LED indicates CPU loading - the higher the CPU loading the more lights come on but as I said all 4 lights flash up and then nothing.

95thrifles - Thanks, looks like that may be my only option. And yes I did remember standoffs :)

well theres no less than three versions of that cpu you have by the looks of it, also different revisions of that board you have, which revision board do you have and which q8200 is it? could be the bios dosnt support it.
taken from gigabyte site for revision 1.0

Intel Core™ 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz 4MB Yorkfield 45nm M1 95W 1333 F1
Intel Core™ 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz 4MB Yorkfield 45nm R0 95W 1333 F5f

The CPU is Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.33GHz 4MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-250-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=567

and the board is Rev 2.1

Intel Core™ 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz 4MB Yorkfield 45nm M1 95W 1333 FB << bios that would normally ship with the board.
Intel Core™ 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz 4MB Yorkfield 45nm R0 95W 1333 FC << updated bios for this model
Intel Core™ 2 Quad Q8200s 2.33GHz 4MB Yorkfield 45nm M1 65W 1333 FC << updated bios for this model

you need to identify which revision cpu you have, as the board bios version might need an update

i had exactly the same problem with my computer.

it was my power supply that had gone. try dissconnecting the PSU from everything and jump start it by connecting the green wire to any of the black wires on the motherboard connector. look here for a better guide Guide to testing problematic power supplies

this is how i found out that my PSU had, had it. ( after this i also tried it on another computer just to make sure)

Thanks for the replies.

I assume the cpu revision number is printed on the CPU?

Well at the moment there is no need to take the heatsink off as I have some of it working now.

PSU, Motherboard, 2 sticks of memory, CPU & Fan all working outside of the case.

I can only assume then that what 95thrifles said earlier about it shorting out was the problem.

We will see.

Thanks again all that answered.
