Problem with new GPU

So i bought the MSI RX 5700 Gaming X, but have a couple of issues.

First is the fans running all the time. Are they not supposed to run until it reaches 60 degrees?

Second is monitoring the temp. I use RealTemp for CPU and it used to show my Nvidia GPU temps as well, but i can't get it to show the AMD temps. In the settings it has tick box for ATI so this could be the problem.

I am on the latest driver (20.2.2) and everything is working as it should bar these issues.

The fan is only running slow at idle so silent any way, but would prefer it to stop as it should.

Think i have sorted the fan.

Was having a look in the AMD control center and as soon as i entered the Manual Tuning section, the fan stopped.

Have checked using GPUZ and it now starts at 62° and turns off at 45°.

Just a update on this.

For some reason the fan problem returned, would not turn off.

Tried the newer driver but still the same, so downgraded to 19.12.2 and that seems to have worked.

Problem now is the core speed. It idles at 6MHz and only reaches 1675MHz.

Never really had any experience in overclocking a GPU, but surely it should reach closer to the advertised boost speed of 1750MHz.

Anyone got any advice on how to improve this, or have i just been unlucky in the silicon lottery.

At the moment it is on auto with the old driver. It was with the newer drivers i had to put on manual to stop the fans.

Am using GPUZ to check the core speed which tallies with what Radeon CP reports.

Bit loath to install Afterburner as i already have Radeon + Dragon Center (for RGB only)

What i was thinking of trying next is to install the driver only without the Radeon CP and then install Afterburner to see if that helps.

So, just had my first BSOD in a long time.

Restarted the PC and fan is running on the GPU again. :(

Temps are 35°. Fan speed is 923 rpm.

Well that did not work.

Got another BSOD and fan is running again.

DDU and reinstall 20.4.2 fully this time. Also removed my overclock on the CPU to rule that out.

Swear to god i wish i had stuck to Nvidia now. :(

That's just it though, it should be plug and play with the option to tinker with the software later.

Not tinker with the software to get it to run properly in the first place.

Could never go Console. Mouse and keyboard FTW. :D

Unlike before this go around they will support mouse and keyboard natively. No artificial limits/restrictions.

As for plug and play, it is...it's just not the way you want :D
And idle temps of 40C are the max for me, anything higher will case the fans to spin up and work harder getting temps in line do to higher temps at idle.
That tells me that your case is hot!!
When I would use 0 fan it would idle around 35-38C.

When was the last time you did some "spring cleaning" clearing out all the dust bunnies?

Gave it a clean last week.

Reading online ~ 45° is normal at idle. Meant to turn on at ~ 62°

Just peed off that at random times the fan start spinning and the only to stop them seems to be a reinstall of the driver.

I suppose on the plus side, when the fans do turn on they are only at 31% and the temps are only 32°.

Right. I think i have it fixed now

Think it is a motherboard fault on the PCIE slot. (found this out with my GTX 1070)

With the GPU out my 3.3v is ok, with it installed it drops to ~ 2.75.

In my haste to switch GPUs, i forgot all about this problem and never propped the 5700 up near the power cables.

Now that it is propped up it is back to ~ 3.2v.

Hopefully my troubles are over now. :)

Pretty much did all that apart from removing CMOS battery, i just set bios to defaults.

As i said, the 3.3v was very low. Fixed by propping the GPU up and has been fine since, no more BSOD and the fans are working as they should.

Another update on this.

Started BSODing again with only 2.75v instead of 3.3v.

I moved the GPU down to the second slot but still the same. Then i had a idea, the only thing left to try without spending money was to go back to basics with the cables.

Removed all the fancy extensions and what do you know, all back to how it should be 3.3v is 3.296v.

Checked the 24 pin extension and one of pins was pushed out so not making a connection.

Hopefully that is it sorted once and for all now. :)

Now that it is problem free, decided it was time.
