Problem with new monitor

I bought a monitor the other week as my previous one packed up. The new one is just a cheap Acer LED 21.5". I regret buying it now as afterwards I saw that the price of the cheap ips screens has come down and I wish I had paid a bit more and got one of those.

However, I am finding the new monitor very hard on my eyes. After a while using it my eyes are aching and they soon feel as if I have been up all night. It just feels as if my eyes are having to work really hard using this monitor. I didn't have this problem with my last monitor or my laptop or any other screen I have ever used.

The strange thing is that initially the display looks really good and clear. I have played around with the brightness and contrast settings a lot and currently have them turned right down which helps a bit. Default settings were far too bright. The only clue I have as to what might be wrong is that sometimes I am aware that lines on the screen just below or to the side of where I am focusing appear to be shimmering. Despite the display looking very clear at first I find after a while I find my eyes losing focus and I have to consciously focus on the text again.

I am connecting via DVI btw and according to a recent eye test my eyesight is fine :D

I know my description is a bit vague but does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? I am tempted to take it back but if they try it the monitor appears to be working fine. It is only after using it for some time that I start getting the problem.

thanks

I assume the windows wizard is part of win7? I am running linux and XP. I have made some more adjustments and it seems better tonight so will see how it goes. I adjusted the RGB values from all at 50 to all at 25. Gives me a bit more leeway on the brightness and contrast as I had turned those down to 10.
