hi im new to all this building/modding stuff and i was wondering if you would answer a few questions for me.
ive bought a new case and power supply seperately and i just today put them together to see what the lights/led fans look like together, but the problem im having is that they arent lighting up/blowing is this normal, does the power supply have to be connected up to the motherboard(which it isnt) for it to work,
ive tried the fans/lights with a seperate molex connector from my old pc and they work so im guessing i have a faulty psu(im hoping its not as it just arrived today)

Hi there,

Welcome the forums.

Your correct, usually the psu has to be connected to the motherboard for it to switch on.

However, you can run a psu without using a motherboard.

All you need is a little peice of thin wire. Take the ATX motherboard connector on the psu, you should see a green wire. That needs to be connected to a black wire (ground) on the psu ATX connector. It makes a loop. Make sure the psu is switched off at the back before doing this.

Once the wire is connecting the green and black wires, switch on the psu at the back and all your lights and fans etc should come on / work.

thanks a lot guys,i wont be trying the wire trick just yet,i think ill wait until i get the rest of my system in to the case on saturday
i was hoping i wouldnt have to wait and send it back to england for a replacement
