Well I just installed my new card had trouble for the first time ever getting the driver to install. After I finally got it working I now have a strange problem!

The fan keeps running up to a very loud pitch every 30 seconds or so when running a 3D app!

What could be causing this?

I am running the latest Cats with ATI tray tools instead of the CCC-could this be the problem?

Run up AtiTool and monitor the temps. Could be its just the auto fan control kicking in. You should see a peak on the graph everytime it happens if its temp related. My X1800/X1900 do/did similiar things

Well I noticed that the full driver is still not installed properly so I have used Driver cleaner and tried to re install the Cat 6.8's. I get "no VGA display adapter found error"
So I tried the disc that came with the card and that is now installing!.....these cards must use a different driver me thinks?...a bit like the x1900 when released?

The 6.8 drivers give me the same error too, even with my spare X550. I think it's just a bug in them. The problem you're describing in regards to your fan also sounds like some sort of driver bug to me with the auto fanspeed settings.

The driver on the CD will probably be an earlier version, so if they work then I would just stick with them. I am still using 6.4 for my X1900XT.

You'll have to use the drivers supplied with the card on the CD as no CAT's are compatible with the x1950's yet as they have just been released, the ones on the CD are modifed to work with it, so you use them until a new set of CAT's are released that will be compatible, probably the 6.9's. :)

Its what they do when they release new cards, they modify a set of drivers to work with them and stick em on the CD's just to get you going which you use until they release a proper set, the 6.9s will probably be the first ones that start supporting the x1950's as those havn't been released yet as said, and i thought the 6.9s might have been out this week, but i think they have delayed them to add the x1950 support as they normally release the new CAT's the beginning of every month, so i think we'll see them next week sometime now with x1950 support.

I wish I had read this before wasting time and getting stressed!

Thanks for the heads up Loadsa!

I also think that ATI Tray tools is causing the fan problem as now I am using the wonderful  CCC it has gone away!

Yeah as ATi Tray tools won't be compatible yet either probably, glad you got it sorted though, i bet its well quiet.

Yep! all is running well now and I even find that the CCC is not as bad as when it was first released!

I have had a silly upgrade really going from an X1900XTX but hey I'm sure I'll find a buyer to counter the spend on this card!

I have to say that regardless of performance these new cards are the best looking and most solidly build GFX cards ever...they really are a thing of beauty with that red plastic and chrome cooler.....ooh wheres the tissues!

You went from an x1900 XTX to an x1950  why ?

Why do we all waste money on computer hardware compared with the average user?

I agree this was the most pointless upgrade ever but I like the new cooler and I like installing new toys!

Cat 6.8's work for me - sort of.

Bear in mind that I'm using the x64 version. I'm still getting a missing device tho, so after reading this thread I stuck in the cd and did a search. It found a driver!

So at the moment I'm using some hybrid install lolol.

Well this is what I am planning on doing

To sell my two 19" 1905 Dell TFT's I had to bundle a standard 1900XT in with them ( all for £400 so not too bad) and with the selling of an Opty 144, 9800 Pro and X800XL , am thinking that with all the bits and bobs I am basically hoping to swap a plain X1900XT for a silent X1950 with the money for the two TFT's still in my pocket

Not too bad a deal or an upgrade to my mind ( I might of course just save a little more and go for a silent X1900, but tempted by the faster ram and even better cooler on the X1950)

Waiting for all the money to arrive first though

Surprised beta Cat 6.9's dont work though
