oh I do like to be beside the seaside
I'm trying to install a wireless router (NETGEAR WGR614) for a friend who's on Virgin cable.

She's currently using a USB connection from the modem to the PC, and I can't seem to get the ethernet port working.
When I plug in a cable and connect to it my laptop the ethernet light doesn't come on (am pretty sure the cable is ok).

The modem is an NTL Home 120.

Any ideas what I can do?

Cheers.

When changing the connected device with an NTL/Virgin cable modem you need to
1: turn off both the modem and the device it's being connected to.
2: After about 30-60 seconds turn the modem on, and wait for it to settle down fully (basically for it to finish connecting).
3: Turn on the connected device.

However from what you're saying it sounds like it could be the modem's ethernet port (i'm not sure if it's turned off when you're using USB - i know you can't use both at once), I would do the above first, then try a different ethernet cable, making sure it's a straight/patch cable.
