Hey there,

I've just bought a new Creative T7900 sound system and a pci-e creative soundcard. Now i didnt realise until after the items had been dispatched that i didnt have any x1 pci-e slots! I've got a 4coredual-sata2 asrock motherboard which only has a pci-express graphics slot (which i believe is 4x or 8x). Now as im using the AGP slot on the motherboard for the graphics, would there be any way that i could use the pci-e gfx slot for the sound card as i've heard that 1x cards will work in the faster slots. The problem I have is if I can use this pci-e slot while using my agp slot also. I've contacted ASrock support but they are slow as usual.

Anyone got any ideas or know if this is doable?

I was under the impression that putting a pci-e x1 card into a normal pci-e should work as normal, never tried it though can't say for sure.

According to other forum posts google returned and wikipedia, it should be fine as long as you can get the pins to match up properly (but not to force it!).

PCIe slots come in a variety of physically different sizes referred to by the maximum lane count they support. Common sizes are x1, x4, x8, x16 . A PCIe card will fit into a slot of its size or bigger, but not into a smaller PCIe slot. The number of lanes actually connected to a slot may be less than the number supported by the slot size allowing use of a wider range of cards in a slow slot.

I was thinking more along the lines of, will i be able to use the pci-e and agp port on motherboard at the same time as its a dual slot mobo. I'm not sure if the pci-e slot is forced off when the agp slot is in use.

I've got this motherboard btw :
