Lurked around here for long enough I think it's time to make a post and see if anyone may have any suggestions.

First of info on the model:

Peugeot 306 XS 1.8 2001 reg

It had its last service at the end of October and since then I've had problems with the car not starting, stalling when approaching junctions and putting the clutch down or the revs going really low (fluctuating between 1200 and as low as 200 when idling). The problem is intermittent and it can run fine for weeks then out of the blue start playing up again.

Its been to 3 mechanics so far and is currently with a 4th in the hope that he may find what exactly is wrong with it. He's keeping the car until it plays up again, however he's already had it a week driven it about 50 miles and its been fine.

From searching on google I've found that theres a common fault with the ECU and coils causing the problem. And its apparently not an easy or cheap thing to change or fix.

I thought the problem might be weather related as we obviously had a lot of snow over the winter and when it last played up before going to this mechanic a few weeks a go there had been some icy weather. But there's been days like that since and he hasn't had the problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Where would I stand on selling/part exchanging the car to the dealer as it's obviously not roadworthy as it stands.

Sounds like the ICV to me (Idle Control Valve), from memory it's just to the left of the airbox, under the accelerator cable.

Take it out give it a clean with some carb cleaner, see if that sorts it for a bit.

Is this the same engine as in the Xantia ? if so i had this too , it turned out to be the stepper motor , i think they are about £80-90

Next time I speak to the mechanic I'll ask him to check the IACV and stepper motor.

Its strange that 3 mechanics might not have checked or spotted that already, but it's worth asking.

I've had the car stall on me going from 3rd to second on a main road before, so I don't want to drive it until I know for sure it's safe to do so.

Thanks Ash. Signed up and browsed pug306.net. Found quite a few owners with similar problems and not all of them have come to a conclusion on whats wrong with their cars yet and quite a few have given up.

So far it points towards the ICV and stepper motor for most of them.

Will ask the mechanic to check both to see if there's any obvious signs that they're not in 100% working order.
