Problem with poor MacBook wifi reception

Hey,

Tonight my wireless internet has suddenly become intermittent, and refuses to connect unless it is within a few meters of the router. Other laptops and devices in the house work fine, so this is definitely a problem with the MacBook, rather than the router.

Just walking a few meters away from the router increases packet loss from 0% to > 50%. Any further away and it disconnects completely. The same problems occur whether encryption is on or off.

Usually a few neighbours routers appear, but now nothing is showing. This seems to suggest that this is a problem with the wireless antenna/card inside the laptop.

Anyone else had this happen before? My AppleCare has run out and I'd rather not pay to fix this, and using a USB wifi adapter isn't really an option :(

Thanks
Alex
