Problem With PS3 Disk Drive?

My brother asked me to look at his 60GB launch PS3 earlier today, as it kept crashing during games.

Sure enough, when I loaded up a multiplayer game on CODMW2, the system would freeze when the matches ended at the scores list. No matter what I pressed on the controller, or how long I left the system (1 hour 30 mins), nothing would happen, it had frozen. In the end, I decided to shut the PS3 off by holding the power button down.

I went to try another game to see if it was just Modern Warfare, but it did the same on Fifa 10. This time, when I restarted the PS3, it wouldn't recognise any discs that I put in. They just wouldn't show up in the XMB and the auto-run feature didn't autorun.

I'm thinking there is something wrong with the Blu Ray drive, as the problems only seem to arise when the system is reading from the disc (loading the game lobby on COD and substitutes on Fifa). I was just wondering if anyone else had any suggestions or had experienced this problem before.

Laser has gone mate, Common problem.

Can be bought from internet and easy enough to install yourself if you are confident enough.

Plenty places will do it for you of course.. but will cost more ££

I had heard of this laser problem, but I hoped this wouldn't be the case.

If anyone changes it, it'll be me. And to be fair, I can't be bothered, I have exams I need to revise for. I'll tell him the bad news, it's up to him what he does.
