I am trying to resolve a PC problem for a relative. He is running Windows 7 and MS Office 2010. Whenever he fires up Outlook he gets a MsgBox advising him that it is "Configuring Microsoft Office 2010".

If he allows it to run to completion it reboots the PC but reappears when he opens Outlook again it reappears. He can (sort of) circumvent the problem by clicking on the "Red X" in the top right-hand corner of the Configuration MsgBox after EVERY single command. This also happens with Word and Excel.

He has Googled the problem and attempted the fix at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2528748 without any joy. He has also tried running CCleaner.

Can anyone offer any ideas as to how he can get round this wretched situation?

TIA

He lives a long way away so a "repair" is a non-trivial and potentially disastrous exercise - therefore definitely a last resort.

He has had and has used MS Office 2010 for about five years - so for quite some time.
This problem started about a month ago. First he thought it was just 'updating' things - but then it just went on and on.
He will send me screen dumps this evening and I will include them then.

Personally I have suggested that he should stop using MS Office and instead use Apache's OpenOffice or LibreOffice but having used it for more than 25 years he still manages to swear by (rather than at) Microsoft.

I've seen this when Office was not installed correctly. Try logging in as an administrator, go to Control Panel, Programs & Features, select Office, and click Change but this time selecting to run everything locally - install everything.

It seems a little hard to believe that after running happily for years, Office 2010 should suddenly decide that it wasn't correctly installed. I suspect that some Microsoft originated "patch" or "update" has failed or broken something.

However, I will tell him to try what you suggest - thanks.

An update on this and hope for any help . . .

He has tried:

Going to My Computer.
On the top menu, clicking "Uninstall or change a program".
Locating Microsoft Office 2010 in the programs list.
Right-clicking it and selecting "Change".

Sadly it goes all the way, says it is "repairing the problem" then gets to the end and says the process was unsuccessful :(

Where to next

Have you excluded file corruption on his drive, and rewrite to corrupt sectors, if after five years this has started happening, perhaps his storage medium is the issue.

When I said run as admin, I meant actually run the office configuration, ' as admin' from the program launch button.
Or just get him to install teamviewer and then log in and run a full repair yourself after a checkdisk to ensure no disk corruption.
