It a W reg 1.6 petrol rover 45 with 95k on the clock, just passed its MOT (albeit with around £200 spent on a new brake caliper and other bits and bobs to get it through, nothing to do with the engine though)
Anyway i was driving along tonight and suddenly it was like the power was instantaneously switched on and off, after which the accelerator basically did nothing. The battery and oil lights also came on at this point. Power steering and other features were ok, but nothing from the engine so i obviously pulled it over asap. Did the standard checks and it turned out the oil was very low, so i called home for someone to bring out some oil, so we fill it up and attempt to drive home slowly.
The car starts up perfectly fine and seems to drive absolutely fine for about 5 minutes when a similar thing to before happens and this time the PAS and brakes work as if the engine is turned off. Again, perfect restart and the further 2 minutes to home is fine again.
On exhaust inspection once home, it does sound a bit "chuntery", but not excessively and i don't know if this is a new thing, I don't often check.
I was just wondering if anyone could shed any light on what the source of the problem might be? It seems at first like I've been an idiot and ruined my car due to not keeping the oil in check, but the engine switch off event seems a strange way for the car to tell me its out of oil? Or is this normal and I'm being ignorant? Or is this symptomatic of a common electrical failure?
Cheers, Dave
