Problem with Steam - Disk write error *Now solved*

Not sure where to stick this, so here it is.

I'm unable to install new games, or update existing ones. It starts to download, than pops up this error after 10 seconds.

I've had a Google, and it seems a common problem, but all solutions I've read, haven't worked.

This is only when using the Steam folder on my games HDD. I attempted to install to the default library on C: drive and works OK.

I've tried the following;

1. Repair steam library
2. Change download region
3. Cleared download cache
4. Uninstalled & reinstalled Steam
5. Completely deleted Steam folder and started again
6. Ran check disc - no errors
7. Checked SMART data for disc - 100% health

I've had my Steam library on this HDD for a good 6 months without issue.

It's just dawned on me while typing this, I think this might be the first time I've used Steam since doing a windows reinstall.

Any ideas before I contact Steam for help?

Running out of space on the drive / partition?

Run as admin, steam that is.

You need admin to write to existing drives on a Windows reinstall.

Who owns the folder?

Also try disabling the windows defender then launching steam as admin.

How can I find out the owner?

I had another Google, the owner was Administrator, I've changed it to my user account, made no difference. See pic (if it works).

Daft one.. Its not read only? Also, try ticking to box to inherit your new settings. As the write is being done in common I think. Not at my pc (camping atm) so hard to remember what I had to do myself

Silly question - is the drive formatted as FAT32? I've read about similar problems when downloading games with file sizes too big for FAT32.

I had that with Doom. My fat32 drive couldn't install it.

Drive is NTFS, and as far as I can tell it's not write protected. The write protect box can be partially filled, ticked, or empty. If I change it to empty, it reverts back. See screenshots.

My steam has started doing similar this week.

Games struggle to install. Take longer to load. Take multiple restarts.. Steam link lags like hell..

Gonna try and reinstall my steam folder on another drive I think.

Have a feeling my hard drive is buggered.

Look for 0kb files and nuke them

The drive could be the problem, since you have no problem installing elsewhere.

What software is recommended to check the drive. Everything looks fine with the drive.

I still think it's some sort of protection/security on the drive, but not sure

Hard Disk Sentinel is pretty good program for an initial test https://www.harddisksentinel.com/hdsentinel_setup.zip

It's definitely not the drive. But something windows 10 related. I had this a few months back but am struggling to remember.

Is there anything in \downloading?

If so, close steam via task manager and delete everything.
