Problem with the mouse pointer

This really is bugging me beyond belief, it started about 2 months ago and I cannot find a solution. My mouse pointer will lock up randomly, sometimes every couple of mintes, sometimes infrequently. The only way to unlock it is to press a keyboard button, I ususally press space bar, or Tab.

1. I have totally reinstalled XP
2. I have replaced my mouse (MX518 to a MX 1000 laser cordless)
3. The keyboard is only about 3 months old
4. Al the latest drivers etc etc

Considered a software problem (updated drivers)
Considered an OS problem (XP reinstall)
Considered hardware problem (new mouse)

Any ideas, it's driving me insane....

Thanks for the welcome. I have installed USB drivers, checked device manager and they are working fine, the port inself works ok with other peripherals. The OS needed a reinstall anyway and it happens both with Vista and XP. That is the annoying part, can't seem to track down the problem.

I can only assume a loose connection or something like that, I'm going to try the USB ports at the front of my box and also the OS2 connection, I have a few adapters lying around.
